Launch of Clean Up Your Catchment Day

Media Release

This year the National Capital Authority (NCA) is hosting Clean Up Your Catchment Day which will be held on Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 5 March, 2017.

The NCA has invited Clean Up Australia Day Founder, Ian Kiernan AO, and Rio Olympics Gold Medallist, Kim Brennan to launch the event to encourage Canberrans to volunteer and clean up their local water ways.

“Canberra’s stormwater system is connected to creeks, ponds, wetlands and lakes, including Lake Burley Griffin, and cleaner stormwater helps improve the water quality in these waterways,” said Natalie Broughton, the NCA’s Executive Director of Estate.

“Lake Burley Griffin has five registered sites for Clean Up Your Catchment Day including Yarralumla Beach, Orana Bay, Lotus Bay, Grevillea Beach and Black Mountain Beach, and we’re encouraging volunteers to come down and lend a helping hand on 5 March,” Ms Broughton said.

Clean Up Australia Day Founder and 1994 Australian of the Year, Ian Kiernan AO, is encouraging community groups, schools, businesses, families, individuals to volunteer to register and to be part of Clean Up Your Catchment Day.

“The event coincides with Clean Up Australia Day, and if you can’t make it to one of the five sites around the lake, you can hop online and register a catchment site near you to help with the clean up of your local environment,” Mr Kiernan said.

As a regular lake user, Olympic rower, Kim Brennan, said prevention is the key to keeping our waterways and Lake Burley Griffin clean, by stopping pollutants and rubbish from entering our stormwater system.

“When stormwater is cleaner, it creates a healthier environment for everyone to enjoy,” Ms Brennan said.

The NCA is part of the ACT and Region Catchment Management Coordination Group, chaired by Emeritus Professor Ian Falconer, a coordination body to achieve long-term benefits for the catchment.
