Lights out for Earth Hour

The National Capital Authority will turn off the lights of several icons in Canberra's central area this Saturday in support of the Earth Hour climate change awareness event.

The National Carillon, Commonwealth Place, National Capital Exhibition, International Flag Display and memorials along ANZAC Parade will be in darkness from 8.30pm until 9.30pm.

National Capital Authority Chief Executive, Gary Rake hopes this symbolic event will assist in raising awareness of the impact of climate change.

"Australia's national capital will join over 500 cities across the globe for Earth Hour to help raise awareness about climate change and global warming.

"By taking part in this significant event, we hope to encourage discussion among the Australian community and real action in combating climate change." Mr Rake said.

This is the sixth year the National Capital Authority has been involved in Earth Hour.

Lighting at the National Carillon, Commonwealth Place and National Capital Exhibition will be turned off for one hour from 8.30pm.

The memorials along ANZAC Parade and the Canadian flagpole at Regatta Point will remain off for the duration of the weekend.

Lighting used in car parks, on streets and for lake navigation will remain on for public safety.
