Autumn Hazard Reduction Burns

Media Release

1 May 2014

The National Capital Authority will conduct two†controlled burns this weekend in Stirling Park and Lindsay Pryor National Arboretum.

Weather permitting, experienced Rural Fire Service fire fighters will conduct the burning operations in the following locations:

South-west area of Stirling Park

Saturday 3 May 2014, 10:00am until 5:00pm

The walking trails around the burn area should be avoided during 10:00am until 5:00pm for the safety of pedestrians and fire-fighters.

West of Lindsay Pryor National Arboretum

Sunday 4 May 2014, 9:30am until 5:00pm

The cycle path around Lake Burley Griffin will be closed during the Lindsay Pryor National Arboretum burn. Cyclists will be diverted onto Lady Denman Drive for a short section. This section of Lady Denman Drive will be reduced to one lane with flag men at each end to manage traffic.

The burns will reduce fuel loads, promote native grass growth and reduce exotic weed species in the areas.

The control burns will cause some smoke in the areas. Every effort will be made to minimise the impact of smoke.

ACT Health advises that people with asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases should not perform vigorous exercise and should stay inside if affected by smoke.

People with asthma in particular should continue their medication and consult their general practitioner if they have any difficulties.

Any changes in dates of the control burn due to weather forecasts will be published on the NCA website
