Autumn Hazard Reduction Burns Rescheduled

Media Release

9 May 2014

Weather permitting, the National Capital Authority will conduct controlled burns this weekend in Stirling Park and Springbank Island. These burns were postponed last weekend due to weather conditions.

Experienced Rural Fire Service fire fighters will conduct the burning operations in the following locations:

South-west area of Stirling Park

Saturday 10 May 2014, 10:00am until 5:00pm

The walking trails around the burn area should be avoided during 10:00am until 5:00pm for the safety of pedestrians and fire-fighters. This burn will reduce fuel loads, promote native grass growth and reduce exotic weed species in the areas.

Springbank Island, West Lake, Lake Burley Griffin

Saturday 10 May 2014, midday until 5:00pm

The control burns will cause some smoke in the areas. Every effort will be made to minimise the impact of smoke.

ACT Health advises that people with asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases should not perform vigorous exercise and should stay inside if affected by smoke.

People with asthma in particular should continue their medication and consult their general practitioner if they have any difficulties.

Any changes in dates of the control burn due to weather forecasts will be published on the NCA website.
