A touring education activity encouraging kids to build their own National Capital using LegoTM was jointly opened today by the Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, the Hon. Jamie Briggs and South Australian Minister for Education and Child Development, the Hon. Jennifer Rankine.

The touring program called, 'Brick By Brick: Build Your Own Capital' allows visitors to create a new National Capital or replicate iconic buildings in Canberra.

Assistant Minister Briggs said the display was developed as an engaging way to tell Australians about their National Capital.

'The aim of the exhibition is to increase Australians' awareness of the unique characteristics of the National Capital,' said Assistant Minister Briggs.

'As well as being the seat of National Parliament and Government, Canberra also celebrates Australian culture through it national institutions, is the location of national commemoration, home to the High Court of Australia and host of over 100 diplomatic missions from around the world.

Brick by Brick is designed for people of all ages and abilities. Construction sheets are available for visitors to recreate the major institutions, bridges and attractions that identify the capital. These range in skill level from easy, to moderate and hard.

The construction sheets have been designed using LEGOTM pieces children would have in their sets at home. Kids will be encouraged to take the sheets away to try the designs at home. These sheets also include fascinating facts and figures about the buildings.

Construction sheets available include:

  • Captain Cook Memorial Jet
  • National Library of Australia
  • Scrivener Dam
  • Australian Parliament House (2D)
  • National Museum of Australia (2D) National Carillon
  • Blundells Cottage
  • Commonwealth Avenue Bridge
  • Australian War Memorial Provisional Parliament House (now Museum of Australian Democracy)
  • Embassy of the People's Republic of China

Creative participants will be able to build their own version of the National Capital. The activity invites participants to build a new national institution, memorial or other building that is important for all Australians and to think about where their design would be placed in Canberra.

'Brick by Brick: Build Your Own Capital' opens to the public at the State Library of South Australia, North Terrace, Adelaide on Thursday 16 January, and will be on display until 19 March. The exhibition is suitable for people 4 years and older.

Opening hours are 10am-8pm Monday to Wednesday, 10am-6pm Thursday and Friday, and 10am-5pm weekends (closed public holidays).
