Final Autumn Hazard Reduction Burn

Media Release

16 May 2014

The National Capital Authority will conduct the final autumn control burn this weekend at West Lindsay Pryor National Arboretum.

Weather permitting, experienced Rural Fire Service fire fighters will conduct the burning operation from 9:30am until 5:00pm on Saturday 17 May 2014.

The cycle path around Lake Burley Griffin will be closed during the control burn. Cyclists will be diverted onto Lady Denman Drive for a short section. This section of Lady Denman Drive will be reduced to one lane with flag men at each end to manage traffic.

The burn will reduce fuel loads, promote native grass growth and reduce exotic weed species in the areas.

The control burn will cause some smoke in the areas. Every effort will be made to minimise the impact of smoke.

ACT Health advises that people with asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases should not perform vigorous exercise and should stay inside if affected by smoke.

People with asthma in particular should continue their medication and consult their general practitioner if they have any difficulties.

Any changes in dates of the control burn due to weather forecasts will be published on the NCA website.
