The National Capital Authority (NCA) is undertaking works on High Mast lights located along Parkes Way, Commonwealth Avenue, Flynn Drive, Kings Avenue and Bowen Drive. The works include demounting the poles, refurbishing and repainting them, as well as inspecting the footings and fixings whilst poles are down and replacing aging and expensive halogen lighting with new cost saving LED lighting.

Of 36 High Mast light poles, the NCA owns 15 and ACT Government owns 21. The NCA is refurbishing all 15 NCA-owned poles, installing 2 new poles that were missing and replacing all 51 halogen lamp cowlings with new LED cowlings. ACT Government is undertaking an internal business case study for their 21 poles.

The High Mast lights were originally erected between late 1960s and early 1970s. The proposed works will have no impact on existing heritage values and are consistent with relevant conservation policies. New lighting is designed to have the same spread of light to roadway as per original lighting.

In order to minimise disruptions, the poles are being taken down between 3am to 7am. During this time there will be temporary traffic control measures.
