The current plantation along the Commonwealth Park bordering Parkes Way contains several weed plants including Cotoneaster glaucophyllus . The project will see the current plantation replaced with Callistemon viminalis ‘Slim’ Red Bottlebrush.
A fence will also be installed along the newly planted area. This is a safety measure to prevent pedestrian access from Commonwealth Park onto Parkes Way.
The works will commence early August and be carried out in two stages to reduce any impact on Commonwealth Park during Floriade. The works are expected to be completed in Summer 2025.
The current plantation is mostly made up of Cotoneaster glaucophyllus – Cotoneaster which has been reclassified as a weed in the ACT. Over the years other self-seeded pest plant species have taken root.
The removal of the current plantings not only allows for the planting of Callistemon viminalis ‘Slim’ Red Bottlebrush but will provide the NCA an opportunity to recreate the original garden beds.
