The Canberra Balloon Spectacular returns from 14–22 March 2026, transforming early mornings at Patrick White Lawns into a vivid celebration of colour and flight. This completely free and weather dependent event invites spectators to arrive from 6am, when more than 40 hot air balloons begin inflating before lifting off across Canberra’s skyline.
Visitors can experience the heat of the burners, the vibrant glow of each balloon, and the unique atmosphere created as the sun rises over Lake Burley Griffin. Food vendors serve hot drinks and pastries, making it the perfect way to start a crisp autumn morning. For those preferring alternative vantage points, excellent views can be found at Regatta Point, Black Mountain Peninsula, the National Arboretum, and Mount Ainslie.
A standout feature in 2026 is Finley the Turtle, the special shape balloon making his Australian debut after his maiden flight in Qatar in December 2025. Finley adds playful charm to the festival’s diverse balloon lineup.
Daily flight updates are posted at 6am on official channels, and when conditions are ideal, balloons typically launch by around 7am. Visitors seeking the ultimate experience can book a sunrise flight with operators such as Balloon Aloft or Dawn Drifters, offering breathtaking aerial views of Canberra.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the 2026 Spectacular continues to delight more than 40,000 spectators each year.
