Firstly, I believe the whole project 2A is a very bad idea and should not proceed in its currently proposed manner. I came here in 1968, and returned in 1988 and love what we have. I disapprove of what the government are attempting to do because of a parliamentary Agreement. We received all that Labor promised but the tram should not have been part of any election. That the Liberals are not in the game is not an excuse for good governance. We cannot afford the tram and all its works, nor crossing the lake etc. Not only is is going to wreck the city and the heritage of the lake and what we have known for so long but economically, public transport patronage wise should not proceed under any circumstances.
Minister Steel said Tuggeranong Valleyis asking for a tram. But if you do the sums and look at the municipal services that need to be offered to the city, this tram project comes out at the bottom of the scale. Where I live does not need a tram. What it needs is fast public transport from each of the catchments into and out of the city. The ACT Govt has never approached each of those catchments en masse to identify where and when commuters need to travel but farmed them up Athllon Drive to Woden Interchange and thence to the city. This route is nonsensical. A car driver-the competition, would not go via Woden to the city but via Tuggeranong Parkway or Erindale-Yamba which I have done in 30 mins, rather than the hour that occurs now. A tram route will be an even slower journey and further alienate commuters that the govt wants to encourage out of their cars.
Commuters do not like changing from one mode to another-they want a through, minimal stop journey. Please be the Guardians of our city's heritage and stop this project in its tracks before it is too late. It is not needed and there are better alternatives such as the Brisbane Metro, Malmo tram bus, electric buses and other tried and tested technologies out there.
Sincerely,
Russ Morison
