The following formal submission have been made public
Submitter: GIANCARLO SAVARISRaising of London Circuit
As the “proposed” raising of London Circuit is “in preparation for a future light rail system to Woden”, one could be forgiven for assuming that these consultations are just a perfunctory process and that we are in fact dealing with a fact accompli.
The raising of London Circuit to an intersection with traffic lights as shown in the documentation provided is a retrograde step whose effect will be to greatly increase traffic congestion . It is an act of utter folly in environmental and financial terms. It will penalise commuters for evermore and almost certainly destroy many of those private businesses in Civic that have survived the pandemic. Overall, it will have a long term detrimental effect on the quality of life in this city.
While there is a case for making access to the Acton lakefront easier, doing so by raising London Circuit is the least sensible and most financially irresponsible way of doing so. The real reason for raising London Circuit is to let the tram stroll over to the other side of the lake, rather than improving access to the lakefront. If the latter was indeed the objective, no doubt a range of alternative and more sensible options would have been canvassed and presented for consideration.
I therefore submit that the national Capital Authority should recommend to the Minister that the proposed works not be approved, pending the presentation of alternative options for improving access to the lakefront in the Acton area, consistent with character of the National Capital.
