The centrepiece of this playground is known by many titles: the castle, the stone fort, even the tunnel playground. Originally commissioned for the Year of the Child in 1979 it has never been formally named but quickly became one of Canberra’s most loved childhood landmarks. It joined the Play Sculpture by David Tolley, commissioned in 1967, the nearby amphitheatre, the giant chessboard and the stream valley to create a family activity area within Commonwealth Park.
‘The Castle’ has been renovated and updated to comply with modern safety standards so that it can continue to be a favourite destination for the children of Canberra.
