The National Capital Authority (NCA) is committed to informing and educating all Australians about their National Capital, even if they don’t have the opportunity to visit Canberra.
The aim of the Brick by Brick travelling exhibition is to increase Australians’ awareness of the unique characteristics of the National Capital. Therefore travelling exhibitions have been displayed in other capital cities and in regional Australia including:
- Grand Visions: Centenary of the Capital Plan toured in 2013
- A Capital Collection: Canberra’s history in Fashion toured in 2014/15
Brick by Brick: Build Your Own Capital is the current NCA travelling exhibition. Building with LEGO™ is so appealing to all ages and has had such a positive response from schools and the general public across Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales.
Brick by Brick encourages school-aged children to create original buildings for their own National Capital or replicate major buildings in Canberra using LEGO™ blocks. The exhibition is designed for children from four years and of all abilities, and includes specially designed wheelchair accessible furniture.
Instructions on how to create 10 major buildings from the National Capital are provided as part of the activity. These have been specifically designed using widely available LEGO™ pieces which children are likely to have in their own collections (participants are encouraged to take the sheets home to continue building). These sheets also include fascinating facts and figures about major cultural institutions and other buildings in the National Capital.
The Brick by Brick education activity provides an opportunity for children to investigate our National Capital and re-imagine its next hundred years.
