Project Update
Throughout December and January the project has progressed with new kerbs, kerb ramps, exposed concrete paths and asphalt carpark surfaces being constructed within the Northern carparks.
The front western car park was completed in late December - ahead of schedule.
The front eastern car park is currently underway with expected completion by early February 2026 to avoid any clash with the upcoming Enlighten Festival.
Following this completion the project will continue along Parliament Square East and be complete by late March 2026.
A full closure of Parliament Square East will need to occur for these works.
More detailed information regarding the current and planned road and carpark closures are available here.
Project Summary
The National Capital Authority (NCA) is commencing a project in the Old Parliament House precinct. Works will include:
- repairing footpath and improving accessibility
- upgrading the car parks including resurfacing
Every effort will be made to minimise disruptions during this period; however, some temporary road closures and bus detours will be required. Access to any nearby driveways will be maintained.
Delivery of this package of works will improve the condition of the road infrastructure surrounding OPH, extending their life and safety.
CB Excavations has been appointed (following a competitive procurement process) to deliver the works.
Project Background
The NCA own and manage a large portfolio of civil infrastructure including roads, car parks, paths and stormwater systems.
In 2027 the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) will host events to celebrate the main Old Parliament House (OPH) building turning 100-years old.
The NCA has worked in collaboration with MoAD to identify areas for improvement prior to 2027.
The project timeline is designed to have all works completed in advance of the 2027 celebrations.
