About Scrivener Dam

Scrivener Dam is a gated concrete gravity dam that impounds the Molonglo River to form Lake Burley Griffin. It plays a critical role in maintaining a consistent lake level and managing floods through three sluice gates and five large flap gates.

Ongoing maintenance and improvements

To ensure Scrivener Dam continues to operate safely, the NCA engage specialist contractors to manage the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the dam, flood operations and complex engineering tasks.

Regular audits and inspections are carried out to maintain operability of the dam. This includes daily/weekly routine checks as well as monthly surveillance inspections and comprehensive dam safety reviews.

These regular audits and inspections allow for a proactive maintenance and upgrade program to be undertaken and identify reactive works that are actioned more promptly.

Current upgrades underway

Dissipator Strengthening

The National Capital Authority is undertaking a major project at Scrivener Dam. The project will involve strengthening work on the downstream structure of the dam – the dissipator. These works are the most significant strengthening works completed on the dam since it was first built in 1963.

Sluice Gate 2 Replacement

The National Capital Authority is currently replacing sluice gate 2 at Scrivener Dam. A sluice gate is a valve that controls the flow of water out of a body of water.

Flood Gate 3 Remediation

The National Capital Authority is carrying out remediation to one of the 5 flood gates which operate within Scrivener Dam. The flood gates are one of the dam’s most important operational features, playing a key role in Canberra’s flood management system.
